In May 2025, the market for large body-on-frame SUVs in Russia grew by 12%, reaching 2,300 vehicles sold. The growth leaders were Chinese brands, actively updating and launching new models on the market.
Particular attention was drawn to the Tank 400 — its sales increased 23 times compared to the previous year, setting a record among all segment participants. Significant growth was also shown by the Great Wall Poer (+13 times) and the second-generation Haval H9 (+12 times).
Despite the rising interest, the segment remains niche due to the high cost of vehicles. The most popular body-on-frame SUV in Russia remains the Tank 500, although its sales in May halved compared to May 2024 — down to 482 units.
The top three in sales also included Haval H9 with 280 vehicles sold and the JAC T9, which increased sales by 118%, selling 225 units. The updated Great Wall Poer with a gasoline engine sold 220 units.
Less noticeably, but still growing, the Foton Tunland sold 132 vehicles in May. Meanwhile, the KGM brand (formerly SsangYong) has yet to see success — only 10 Rextons sold.
Thus, Chinese body-on-frame SUVs are confidently strengthening their positions in the Russian market, setting the tone for the development of the large SUV segment.
